bits and pieces

Just at the sight of music studios, grands, violins; plus music, makes me feel so much more at home in INTEC =D. Used to question the reason of me being here and all, but i think i know partly - God knows i need a music faculty, haha =)

Well, first off, i LOVE the Music Faculty in INTEC =). Look around, and you'll soon notice that it's DEFINITELY the MOST HAPPENING block in the entire campus. You hear music in every corner of the building. Look down, and you'll see a few guitarist strumming chords, composing new songs, walk to the music studios, and you hear LOADS of music, ranging from pop, on the electone, rock (the electric guitars, drums and all), and lots and lots of violins + pianos =). Not forgetting the vocal classes! =)

This specific Kawai grand is by far, the best in INTEC, i think. I've tried two Kawai grands, the other is a little faulty, the keys are like a bit sticky and all, but the sound of this grand is rather bright and resonant, what I would prefer =).

.... and, the line for transport is double the length you see in this picture =) It takes more than seven buses to transport all of us back to the hostels!

salad!

It all happened one Monday night. There happened to be some kind of pasar malam/pasar tani below our Akasia/Cemara hostel, so all four housemates adjourned to the brightly-litted, lively area! =D Well, the usual popular stalls would be those selling local delicacies, such as nasi pattani (santhya's all time favourite), chicken kebab (ming ying's dinner), economy rice, multi-coloured drinks, SATAY (50 cents per stick), kuih-muih, you name them =)

... and all of a sudden, e von suggested that we buy vegetables eg. tomatoes, carrots, onions and cucumbers.

Well, what for?? =D,
SALAD, she says.

...haha...

Thus, the origin of our VEGGIEparadise =)
oh yeah, if you happen to be wondering what on earth the topping is;
it's e von's oatmeal biscuit+honey and limau kasturi, which tastes ABSOLUTELY delicious =)

first impressions; corrected assumptions; reality sets in

First off, I realize there are so many more lessons to learn in life, including cutting fruits =D, washing clothes, and dealing with COCKROACHES on an almost daily basis!

Just within the first week itself, my brave heart roomates, Ming Ying, and E Von, have killed THREE cockroaches, under sofas, on clothes, in our bedrooms, bathroom etc. We've seen at least five cockroaches - meaning there are still two in the apartment, unless these roaches have escaped out of the window (which will be GREAT news =)). Let me just give a brief description of the scene in which the ROACH ARRIVES:

(shrill screams) COCKROACH! AHHH!!
Everyone would be running out of the rooms, standing on the sofa, or prancing around on the beds. (more screams and yelps). The brave hero runs to the kitchen, for a broom, dustpan and mop. Some offer to fetch a pail of water. Then, the chasing BEGINS.

BAM! The cockrach escapes yet again. BAM! The cockroach moves into the bathroom. More screams follow. The water splashing starts. Pails of water are emptied into the bathroom, specifically at the cockroach. The BAMming goes on, until the hero is finally successful. Everyone heaves a BIG sigh of relief.

Well, besides the cockroach distress, the room is a little better than what I expected, after all the spring cleaning by our dear parents =). Two rooms per apartment. Each room has two lockers, two beds and a small bedside table for each of us. The living room consists of a whiteboard, four softboards, four tables, a fan, two lights, a shoe rack and four chairs. Lots of power outlets.

Best of all, I absolutely LOVE the INTEC and UiTM anthems. Much more enjoyable to sing, as compared to the state and national anthem =). The atmosphere during the Minggu Mesra Siswa week was ABSOLUTELY loving and friendly. The seniors coordinating the event have been unbelievably helpful, friendly and perfectly organized. They even help out during meal time, handling the food and all.

"A person who is worthy of being a leader wants power not for himself, but in order to be of service." ~ US Senator Sam J. Ervin, Jr.

In sec school and private colleges where I've been, the seniors don't really help the juniors out. Sometimes, they've got this condescending attitude towards juniors.

But in INTEC, at least during that week, it has been an absolutely uniting experience, no class above or below =) And as compared to the official events held in school, the Malaysian 'late' culture did not exist throughout the whole week. Great planning, awesome organizers. Although some of the teachers in charge treat us like kids, sometimes, it has this magical calming effect. eg. When they say, "Adik-adik sekalian..." =) haha. There's also this kempen senyum, where you've got to smile at everyone you meet =). Cool campaigns they have there!

We were taught quite a number of cheers too, eg. a 'terima kasih' cheer, a ridiculously funny 'senyum malu' cheer, etc. oh yeah, not to forget the enjoyable 'senamrobik' session, led by an experienced fitness trainer from (KL?).

To sum it up, it has been a wonderful learning experience, and I believe their high standards spur all INTECians to strive for perfection.

Stayed for a few hours at Aunty Oon and Uncle Jeow's house =)

one of the most student-friendly sites EVER!

www.wolframalpha.com

"...life is a continuous learning experience"
Denis Waitley (American motivational speaker)

With Wolfram Alpha, there's always something to learn, everyday!

Let's just say, almost all math problems can be solved with the WolframAlpha Calculator. Here's a simple example:

... and you can even plot graphs!

http://www23.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=y%3Dsin^-1+(x%2B4)

It comes in handy during Chem HW too =) How cool is that??

http://www23.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=1%2C6-diaminohexane

Check out the 3D structure, basic, and solid properties of the chemical compound too =)

COMPUTE
music intervals and chords:

... unfortunately, I still can't find a solution to my poor memory of augmented sixth chords. The WolframAlpha search engine cannot compute more elaborate chords eg. german sixth, etc.

one of my fav. chords, whee! =)

There're SO MANY MORE FUNCTIONS on this site. Check it out! =)

cherished moments

To tell the truth, the whole 'leaving INTI by this week' decision, was an unforeseen change in plans. I thought I'd stay till the 26th of June, but I was told thereafter (by Xin Ling) that we had to complete many forms and procedures, such as a complete medical checkup (including a blood test), setting up a bank account, buy lots of baju kurungs and long sleeve shirts {????}, etc. Then, there was also the college's refund policy factor. =)

I'll miss almost everything about the col: friends, teachers, the fun english lessons, the wireless network, computer labs, library, lecture theatre, the study cubicles, ...and the list goes on and on.

Anyhow, recollecting all these cherished moments brings joy and immense appreciation =)

A. {in math ex2 class}

May Yee and Wen Zhen discussing Mr. Leong's questions?

[from left to right: May Yee, Wen Zhen, Sarah, Carmen]

there're only four girls in math ex2 out of twenty something students or so
=0. Without any of them, I don't think I could have have survived math. Discussion is CRUCIAL!

May Yee - Physics and Bio reports would remain unfinished if not for her =).

This good-humoured, unassuming lady here has an undeniable flair for math =).
...scroll down...
... and here's what she sends me when i'm away =) --> scanned copies of math notes!

B. Life in a cubicle =)

[from left to right: May Yee, (theen)^2, Ee Hwei, Carmen, Wen Zhen]

ee hwei and (theen)^2 completing homework, lab reports, studying, reading newspaper etc.

Ee hwei - one of the crucial members in our phy lab group =). She always knows how and what to do!

(theen)^2 - the amusing lady who is of the opinion that wen zhen, may yee, carmen and i are extremely fortunate to be in maths ex2, since girls are the minority {???} =D

C. {a mini georgian reunion}

[from left to right: Jia Yi, Koghana, Sarah, Sook Yin, Huey Yong]

Jia Yi - the sweet, demure, and diligent lady, who always goes the extra mile =). When most people would be using two sheets of lined paper for an exam, she would use double the amount, if not, even more! Without her, I would never have been able to complete my lab reports too =).

Koghana - the super intellectual lady. Trademark: Colgate ad teeth + brown eyes =)
Debater at heart. She talks most of the time in debate style. Never fails to impress the entire ESL class too, with her way-above-standard answers.

Wan Yin's going to complete her ADTP program in INTI, and fly off to the US! how awesome is that! We used to be in the POL mandarin classes together up to F3, she's my answer supplier during all the tests and exams, since she's the chinese language pro =). Thanks for all the help!
=D.

Huey Yong - wow, what can I say about her? Practically every HSC student knows her. What's more, she came in only during the March intake. Besides attaining near-to-perfect scores for History, she knows almost anything and everything, especially the 'current issues' within the HSC community =D.
One of my major sources of information =).

Sook Yin - In F1, she used to send me these small special 'don't worry' & 'you'll be fine' notes of encouragement =), how cute! Her artistic handwriting is something to remember too =). Oh yes, she writes BEAUTIFULLY, in the poetic, ancient english style. ...not to forget the poker face she puts on when trying to confuse us by twisting words:

Q: How did you feel about the drama yesterday?
SY: I feel exposed.
Q: Exposed? Why, did they force you to do something against you will?
SY: Oh no, exposed as in 'gained exposure'.
Q: ??

Sarah A - She loves everything contemporary, as can be seen from her clothes, her speech etc. =) My partner in Chem too =).

Thanks for being such awesome col mates =). I'll miss all of you =)

this week

It has been a crazily busy week for most of us, HSC people, because of the ESL presentation, and of course, not to mention, the coming exams. Although it's been rather time and effort-consuming, I'm beginning to enjoy the analysis for English! Thought I knew enough about filmography, but when I starting reading the pink colored ESL textbook, wow! There's so MUCH MORE to each frame composition, eg., vertical vectors, curved vectors, intimate/social distance, contextual objects, camera angle etc. I am so enlightened! =D

I believe, all of us who have done the analysis, would have come to a similar conclusion. =)
